Sanding Water Damaged Wood Floors - Northwest Loss - Home
Damaged wood floors? Many times this process is rushed by either the insurance company or the client themselves. Remember, subfloor differential rule for installation is sufficient and proceeds to refinish the wood floor. However, ...Sunslate water ingress induced failure
Most of the Sunslates in my most recent Sunslate array failed due to water ingress induced tabbing corrosion. This was possibly due to the *ahem* unofficial mounting method used. This would not have happened were these mounted in the normal manner, but that requires loads of proprietary hardware. Buying that stuff would cost a lot more than the modules, hence my design. Live and learn.
Another possible reason for the water ingress is because these modules were stored in suboptimal conditions at the factory (positioned edgewise in an open crate outside) due to their being scrap/power duds. The documentation for these specifically states that they should be stored out of the weather until they are installed. This most likely because the factory caulking is not suitable for direct water exposure as when normally mounted the module sealing is never exposed to more than trace amounts of moisture. The prolonged heat from being in the sun caused this degradation, which explains why all failures have been in modules exposed to direct sunlight and all stored modules not in direct sunlight are still (knock wood) working. These will all be going in the basement shortly in hopes that they will dry out with time. From now on, I will only be getting modules that were stored indoors, and they will all get extra caulking.
Fortunately, this was caught at such a time that only about 20 modules or so were affected. Also, each dead one has a recoverable high current schottky diode that still works and is worth at least what I paid per module (about 75 cents), so this is not a total loss.
