Minwax: Gloss polyurethane.Minwax expert Bruce Johnson on how to finish and restore wood surfaces
DIY tips from Minwax on how to finish or refinish wood surfaces. It is easy to learn how to restore wood in your home such as wood furniture. Take a raw wooden table or old shelving unit and make it glow with warmth and charm with these tips from Bruce Johnson, a do-it-yourself expert and the author of The Wood Finisher.
If you are a beginner, pick an easy project such as a new, unfinished table. To prepare the wood, lightly sand the surface using medium sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain. Sanding the wood will open the pores and take care of any scratches. After sanding the surface, wipe off the dust with a cloth.
Next, apply Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner with a natural bristle brush or foam brush. The pre-stain wood conditioner will give your wood furniture an evenly stained surface as the wood conditioner will make the stain absorb into the wood evenly. Brush Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner on the entire wood surface that will have stain applied to it. You do not have to worry about drips of the pre-stain conditioner as this will not be the final finish. Once the application is complete, allow 5 to 10 minutes for the wood conditioner to soak into the wood grain.
Now you can apply stain using Minwax Wood Finish, which comes in a wide variety of wood finish colors. Dip your brush into the finish about a half inch and apply to the wood surface. Applying Minwax Wood Finish is fast and easy; it does not matter if you brush with the grain or not. Make sure you apply the finish evenly on the entire wood surface. You can get the stain color you want with one coat of Minwax Wood Finish. If you want a lighter stain, wipe off the excess stain with a rag soon after applying. If you would like a darker stain color, let the stain saturate the wood for approximately 10 minutes and wipe off all of the excess stain. Let the stain dry for 6 to 8 hours.
The last step in restoring wood finishes is to apply a final wood finish coat to protect and seal the wood. Use Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane and brush in the direction of the grain of the wood with a smooth, even coat. Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane will provide a nice, rich look and sheen. Wipe off the excess and let it dry for 6 to 8 hours. Apply a second coat of Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane, and you are done.
It is also easy to restore older furniture yourself, such as an old wood chair made in the 1940s or 1950s. The first thing you should do is clean the furniture piece with Minwax Wood Cleaner. Spray the cleaner on a cloth and wipe the piece of furniture.
Next, apply Minwax PolyShades, which is a one-step finish that includes stain and polyurethane in one can and saves time. Using a natural bristle brush, apply thin coats of Minwax PolyShades in the direction of the wood grain.
